It seems there are holidays for just about every occasion. Food items are no exception.  There seems to be a reason to have a holiday or dedication for just about every food items, and why not.  Food can make us happy, or sad depending on what we eat.  Every month, week, and year has its own dedication for a food item.

In the month of October there are many days to dedicate each flavorful food.  Did you ever wonder what pickled peppers, pretzels, seafood, cookies and seafood all have  in common. It is not a vitamin or a color.  Strangely enough they are all dedicated foods for the month of October.  Fortunately for popcorn it has found its place in the same food category as the previously mentioned.

In 1999 this American favorite has settled in this month, because in the Midwest has a harvest for popcorn in the fall.  The Secretary of Agriculture (Dan Glickman)who served between 1995 to 2001 made October the official popcorn month.

Now whenever you sit down and eat a cookie or open up a jar of pickled peppers r you watch the fall leaves turn colors you can instantly remember that you have a bag of unpopped popcorn waiting in the shelf.

To help you remember this wonderful month of popcorn here is a popcorn recipe.

Fall Popcorn Balls

  • 12 cups of popped popcorn
  • 1/4 cup of butter
  • One   Package of Jello
  • Food coloring

1. Take your popcorn and pour it in a bowl.

2. Add butter together with a candy that will soften, ie like marshmellows or a similar candy, microwave it and mix.

3. Take the jello gelatin and mix it with the marshmallows.  Add gelatin to marshmallow mixture. Stir. at this point you could add food coloring.

4. Cover the popcorn with the mixture mix thoroughly. Let it cool. Use butter to make your hands slippery. Shape into balls. Set balls on wax paper.

Instead of using gelatin you could substitute three cups of sugar and one cup of water.  Just heat up the mixture so it gets stringy then mix.
